I was literally standing in the grocery isle looking at cheeses trying to find a unique cheese to add to a burger and in Iowa, that’s close to impossible. I wanted something that went well with sauerkraut and the brat flavors. I then thought how all I wanted to buy for supper was some beer and call it good, (I almost did) until it dawned on me… BEER CHEESE! Yes! Holy baby Jesus that would be AMAZING with brats! I mean people love beer brats right?! So that’s where the Beer Cheese & Kraut burger was born, in the middle of Fareway 2 and seconds away from giving up and buying beer for supper.
This burger is one of my favorites from this summer! It is SOOO good and the cheese is so versatile. If you have any leftover you can use it as a dip or save it for more burgers. The combination of the beer cheese and kraut on the flavored brat is close to heaven and a perfect three-some. The only thing I would do differently (and I have adjusted the recipe from the picture) is not include a pork burger but just have the brat or a brat patty. That much meat is unnecessary in my opinion, simply because there are few toppings for this burger. So grab your favorite bun, I had the pretzel bun in this case because who doesn’t love cheese and pretzels?? And make some beer cheese, add some kraut, and grill some brats! Perfect recipe to impress those neighbors with this Labor Day!
Speaking of Labor Day, this is the SECOND to LAST burger this summer! Where has the time gone?? That means I have a GIVEAWAY! It will be ending on Monday September 7th. So sign up and check back then! The prizes are below and include a “Pigs, The Inventors of Bacon” shirt, an Epicurean pig shaped cutting board, AND an Iowa Food & Families cookbook featuring Cristen Clark of Food & Swine and Kristen Porter of Iowa Girl Eats! Beer Cheese Kraut Burgers
1 Pack of Brats (or use my Brat Burger recipe for homemade brat burgers, I suggest the later)
1 Can of Sauerkraut
1 Package of Pretzel Buns
Preheat your grill and cook brats until they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees. Once they are done cooking take off the grill and let rest for 3 minutes. To best fit on a pretzel bun, cut the brat in half and lay on the bun. Drizzle the beer cheese on top and top with sauerkraut and your favorite toppings! Ketchup tastes great with this too!
I got this recipe from The Merry Thought but tweaked it a bit
3 Tblsp. Butter
3 Tblsp. Flour
1 Cup of Beer
1/2 Cup Milk
1 Tblsp. Garlic Salt (Or more to taste)
1/2 tsp. Dry Mustard
1/4 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
1 1/2 Cup Colby Jack Shredded Cheese
1 1/2 Cup Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
I pre-measured all ingredients and got them ready to dump in the pan when the time came to add them because you don’t want to burn the milk or cheese. In a pan on medium heat combine the butter and flour, constantly whisking until golden brown and mixed well. Gradually add the milk and beer, whisking constantly. Once the milk and beer are combined and slowly bubbling, add in the garlic salt, mustard, and Worcestershire Sauce constantly whisking. Turn the burner off and add in the cheeses. Serve hot as a dip or topping! Enjoy!
