This past year has been a roller coaster, and there are still days where I feel like the date on the calendar should be more like mid-September, but here we are December 20th, five days before Christmas. Our family has been so blessed this year, we bought our first new home, gained so many new friends, bought a farm, and I got my dream job. What more could we ask for? Greg and I feel so blessed for where we are at today. It was just a month ago, where we both thought, we have so much to be Thankful for, how can we not give back?
Last summer when we moved into our house our new neighbors invited us to a block party, we met all of our wonderful neighbors and they all happen to be on the Nora Springs Fire Dept. Yes, we live in safest neighborhood on this side of the county! I think my motherly instincts kicked in a bit when we were looking at our house and this is why I “knew” this was our neighborhood, without even knowing it at the time. As fate would have it, Greg decided to drop by the fire dept. one night just a month ago, and low and behold that same night they were interviewing for new positions on the fire department, and Greg is now one of the newest members of the Nora Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
Growing up in a fireman family, I couldn’t have been happier. My step dad was also farmer and a volunteer fireman and eventually became the fire chief for a number of years. Growing up, this is how I learned the importance of helping others. Greg and I are so busy, but so fortunate, and this is how we can give back.
As pig farmers, we believe in not only feeding the world, but also in feeding our community. Food brings people together, and is often the center of community gatherings. Greg is now taking weekly fire classes, and to show our appreciation for all the current firemen and women, we made them hams for their training last week. As pig farmers, we believe in giving back and this was the least we could do to show our appreciation. We are more at home here Nora Springs than what we ever imagined, and to that we are thankful.
A wise friend of mine once said, “If you donate to ANY cause, donate to your local fire department, and then pray to God you never have to call them.”
The Schmitt family wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a fire-free new year!
