This last Saturday I got the last minute opportunity to go to the 2nd Annual Baconfest in Clear Lake. I can honestly say that I have never been to a baconfest before. I knew this would be a hit with Miss L, bacon is her favorite food and it is probably one of her most requested foods -no coincidence seriously! I ended up going with my father’s girlfriend Lisa who also was attending her first baconfest and was ecstatic to go as well! Before we entered the doors of the historic Surf Ballroom Armour Eckrich was there to greet us with free packages of summer sausages and grilled bratwurst to enjoy while we waited for the doors to open.
When we walked in and we were greeted by a very enthusiastic Baconfest team who handed us our gift bags which included free items from the various restaurants and vendors. We received coozies, playing cards, coupons and much more! As we entered, various vendors lined the dance floor of the roomy Surf Ballroom. The sounds of a band filled the room by an artist named Ben Lau. There were many different kinds of businesses there serving up bacon goodness and the smell was close to heaven! The variation of businesses ranged from cupcake makers, to mexican food vendors, and of course meat distributors! Miss L and I didn’t get a chance to reach them all. On this outing I discovered that it probably wasn’t the best event to take your two year old. Miss L had FAR beyond the patience I expected her to have and was a VERY good girl. There were so many people that it made it hard to hold her, grab samples, make sure she got some, and when I put her down to walk she would hang around but there was just too much to keep track of. This event is a GREAT family event for families with children 5 and over.
All in all we had a wonderful time and Miss L fully enjoyed the pig dressed up on the stage for the pig oinking competition. Because I was fully extending my time beyond the patience I expected out of Miss L we missed the bacon eating contest but I fully intend on taking my husband to this event next year and we can make a date night out of it. 🙂
Here are some of the restaurant and vendor booths we sampled in order by our favorites:
1. Kor-bert Meats (Mary Ann’s Specialty Foods) -They served up samples of their favorites, bacon, ham, and little smokies! Yum!
2. Armour Eckrich Deli Meats- They served samples of their ham rolled up, small square doughnuts with chocolate frosting and bacon garnish, and these awesome squealer sliders! Which I got the recipe for Yumm!
3. Grandma Sugar’s Cupcakery- They served up these scrumptious little maple bacon cupcakes! The cupcake and frosting was maple flavored and it was garnished with bacon on top. If you want a great Maple Bacon Cupcake recipe try this one I made for Valentine’s Day!
4. Sips- They had these little maple pepper bacon wrapped black fig with serrano chocolate. I have never had a fig before and I wasn’t quite sure what to think about this BUT it was pretty good for how small it was.
I wish I had made it to Woodford Lumber & Home – They had these bacon halo ‘cocktail’s, and spicy apple crisp with bacon crumble, and bacon infused biscuit with jalapeno filling. -whhaaaat?? I can’t believe I missed this. Next year 🙂
While visiting Clear Lake for the Baconfest I fully took advantage of my time there to visit one of my favorite Main Streets! I made a stop at Larson’s Mercantile and found a cute little bacon themed find for my kitchen. My favorite lunch spot is on Main Street as well, its Starboard Market. They have many mouthwatering sandwiches and homemade salads to choose from, my personal favorite is their Chicken Enchilada Soup which I have been trying to replicate for years. Clear Lake has so much to offer for food, shopping, and entertainment; the Main Street is full and alive of family owned shops and something for everyone. There is always something going on in Clear Lake especially in the summer on the weekends, there is always something to see or do! Check it out for your next weekend trip I promise you wont be disappointed!
